We found very valuable information on clothing in Tom Sheppard's book Vehicle-dependent Expedition. We will be exposed to both extreme hot and cold weather.

For the cold weather we decided that we need to be like onions, have layers. For the hot weather we want clothes that keeps sweat away from our bodies. One important factor is that all clothes need to dry very quickly.

We bought very little clothes in total due to the limited space in the car. It was also decided to buy good quality items which will hopefully last very long. Most items were bought from Cotswold, especially from the closing down sale of the Covent Garden shop. The only problem we faced was that during winter they only stock winter clothes and vice versa in summer, unlike South Africa where it is very easy to find clothes for both seasons throughout the year.

Here's a summary of what we are taking along clothes wise:

Winter:
Combination of base layers, both tops and bottoms by various manufactures including Ice Breaker, Helly Hansen and Low Alpine. The merino wool products are really warm, but some prefer the Dry Base Layer.
Fleece tops - short sleeve windwall and lightweight ones by Northface and long sleeve ones by Norhtface and Berghaus. Coenraad bought a Lowe Alpine fleece which looked old after the first wash which he decided not to take along.
Waterproof lightweight jackets, which are also breathable and windproof.
Craighopper Lined Trousers.
Socks by Bridgedale and Decathlon, Endurance and Trekker, including sock liners.
Beanies and gloves, here it is all about personal preference. Ivan and Yolandi both bought beanies that cover the ears by Berghaus and Northface. Coenraad again said he doesn't want to look like an idiot and went for a trendy Nothface one. There are loads of different gloves out there. Yolandi for example are taking her £4 Primark leather gloves because they are warm and tight fitting which means you can still use your hands unlike the really thick ones which you have to take off every time you need a tissue from your pocket.
Walking boots, there are many brilliant brands out there. The girls went for Asolo boots.

Summer:
Sandals, by Keen and Oakley, if we have space we will take our Crocs as well.
Zip off trousers and normal shorts. Various brands including Colombia and Craighopper.
Mountain Equip Light Long Trousers are brilliant!
Short Polo men’s Shirts by Berghaus - very good.
Ladies blouses in various brands including Columbia, Northface and Craighopper.
Light long sleeve shirt to wear at night against mosquitoes.
Sunhats, from Stormlight and Decathlon.
Sarongs’

In summary, we have one set of winter clothes each (made up of loads of layers). For summer we have one set of lightweight long wear against mosquitoes at night, three short shirts, and two pairs of shorts. Beanies and gloves for winter, hats for summer. One pair of boots and one pair of sandals. And of course our underwear and swimsuits!

We paid in the region of £700-£1,000 each for our clothes and we hope that they will last for at least two years on the road.

Because Meinhardt gets bigger every week we will buy his clothes along the road. Or else he can just walk around in his birth suit.

26 Mar 2010
Change of plans, folks. Our trip has come to an end. After spending three beautiful months on this continent, it is now time to go back home. Some new adventures to look forward to.. We are now back in Buenos Aires sorting out the paperwork for the shipment of the car and organizing our flight back to Europe. We will put our forces together in the next few days to sort out the website and share our experience with you. Love. I & D
