Preparing for any medical emergency can be quite a daunting task. Most of the overland websites we've read through so far said they totally overdid it with the first aid kit and that you can get away with only the basics. Apart from this we never read any stories of people getting very ill and not able to find help of some sort. We still need to find out about medical insurance, if it is affordable, plan B would simply be to get on the first plane back home and get medical treatment from a public hospital. We need to compare prices and entitlement for both Plan A and B and will base our decision on the outcome of these factors.

After consulting a doctor for advice we stocked our first aid kit with the following:
Ciploxx - Broad Spectrum Antibiotic
Voltaren - Aching Muscles
Valoid - Nausea & Vomiting
Kantrexil - Gastro-Enteritis
Bactroban Cream - Antibiotic Cream for Treating Skin Infections
Synap - Painkiller
Silbecor - Antibacterial Cream
Novesine Eye Drops - Local Anaesthetic Eye Drops
Coartem - Malaria Treatment
General Ear/Nose/Eye drops
Imodium - Diarrhoea
Panadol - Headache
Malaria Test Kit
Salt & Sugar Water - Dehydration
And then the usual plasters, tea tree oil, etc.

The total cost of the medicine was £95. Yolandi's parents gave us their old first aid kit, which they used during their stay in Mozambique, as present, which has all the plasters and bits. We consulted a doctor for medical advice while on holiday in South Africa, they are a bit more realistic and also more used to travelling in Africa than the UK travel clinics. For the baby we will use herbal medicine where possible.

We all went for the yellow fever shot as this is compulsory for some countries.

Yolandi and Ivan did a basic first aid course. For the rest we will use common sense.

Buenos Aires
26 Mar 2010
Change of plans, folks. Our trip has come to an end. After spending three beautiful months on this continent, it is now time to go back home. Some new adventures to look forward to.. We are now back in Buenos Aires sorting out the paperwork for the shipment of the car and organizing our flight back to Europe. We will put our forces together in the next few days to sort out the website and share our experience with you. Love. I & D
